Standard program: Four years
Degree awarded: Bachelor of Science
Introduction: Marine Technology is the earliest established marine information program in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei Urban Agglomeration, focusing on the acquisition, analysis, and application of both marine and terrestrial information obtained from various sources, including remote sensing data, in-situ observations, and numerical modeling data. This major is characterized by itsinterdisciplinary feature, involving information technology,as well as chemical and biological technologies.Meanwhile, this major is science-based, combining science and technologyand especially favoring thecultivation of practical skills. As the PI of many national and provincial projects, faculty members of Marine Technology own a number of software copyrights and widely cooperate with the enterprises and institutions in the Binhai New Area; thus, undergraduate students in the major have been offered numerous internship opportunities.
Cultivation objectives:Marine Technologyaims to cultivate a solid foundationof knowledge and basic skills in remote sensing (RS) and geographic information systems(GIS) in marine applications and to develop an internationaland interdisciplinary perspectiveof oceanography. This major highly encourages good scientific thinking and innovation qualities forexploratoryresearch in marine science, data processing of RS and GIS, as well as information system development and integration. In general, Marine Technologyis dedicated to cultivating application-oriented talents for high-tech enterprises, national and local institutions, as well as colleges and universities in the fields of oceans, environment, geology, agriculture, forestry, water resources, and transportation.
International and domestic cooperations:Marine Technologyprovidesbroad academic exchanges and evolvinginternational cooperations with abroad scientific research organizations and universities, such as the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Canada and Ehime University in Japan. The young faculty members and students have been offered a number of opportunities toconductcollaborative research and pursuea degree program respectively. Meanwhile, this major also encourages outstanding faculty membersand students to participate in variousinternational academic conferences and makeoral or poster presentations. Domestically, Marine Technology has cooperated with the Ocean University of China, the Institute of Remote Sensing of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Tianjin Marine Center Ministry of Natural Resources, providing favorableinternshipand practice bases available to all the registered students. Meanwhile, leading enterprises such as China National Offshore Oil Corporation (China) Tianjin Branch Engineering Construction Center, Tianjin CNOOC Engineering Design Company, and China Remote Sensing Technology Tianjin Limited Company haveprovideda wide range of employment and internship opportunities for graduates.
